Praying For and Through the Holidays
Are you already up to your elbows in
  • Turkeys and hams?
  • Searching for everyone's favorite recipes?
  • Drying bread for homemade stuffing?
  • Christmas shopping – online or in-store?
  • Figuring out who is coming and what they can bring?
  • Dreading every moment of the next few weeks?
Whether you love the holidays or hate them, there is a strategy to include in your preparation.  Even if you aren’t hosting or aren’t even sure you have a place to go, the Lord is ready to help you have the best season possible.

Take a moment to consider the things that cross your mind as you approach this special time of year.  That’s what I did as I prepared this prayer list specifically designed for the love/hate relationship many of us have with the holiday season.

Are these prayers good any time of year?  Yes!  Could they make a difference in your joy and effectiveness for the Kingdom during this time of year?  Absolutely!

You can use one a day, pray all of them every day, or find the one that best fits what’s concerning you today.

Pray to desire God’s glory above your own – 1 Corinthians 10:31; Colossians 3:23

Pray that all that you will not do anything that can’t be done in the Lord’s name – Colossians 3:17

Pray for grace in togetherness - that you won’t expect perfection in yourself or others – John 1:16

Pray believing because all things are possible with God – Mark 10:27

Pray to know/understand someone better – Luke 10:27

Pray that you will look for positives first – Philippians 4:8

Pray that you will be a blessing to others  - Colossians 3:12

Pray for wisdom for every situation - James 1:5

Pray that you will be forgiven and/or will forgive others – Colossians 3:13

Pray for encouragement from the Lord when things are stressful – Isaiah 40:31

Pray to ask for help when needed and accept help when offered – Ecclesiastes 4:9

Pray that you will take every opportunity to share what the Lord has done for you – Colossians 4:6

PRAYER:  Lord, I pray for each person who accesses this list.  I pray that they will rely on you for whatever they need the most in this season.  I pray that all of us will take on only the things that honor you and not exhaust ourselves with burdens that don’t enhance anyone’s holiday.  Guide us in your wisdom and encourage us as only you can do.  Amen.

Please drop a comment if you find the list helpful and/or if you have any suggested prayers to add.

Also, I’ve included a PDF that you can download, as well as a JPG you can save to your phone's photo gallery.

Meet Beth

Beth was blessed to be raised by parents who taught their children to love the Lord.  She trusted in Christ for salvation and followed in believer’s baptism when she was eight years old.

Beth thanks the Lord for leading her parents to First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Missouri, where the youth choir practiced and sang in the 8:15 am Sunday service each week.   This was great preparation for understanding the joy and the responsibility of serving Christ’s church.

Throughout her adult life, Beth has served in many roles across various church ministries – most of them while working full-time.  Her favorite roles involve discipling women by studying and teaching the Bible and its power for our lives.

She has taught an adult Sunday School class on Sunday mornings since 2010.  In addition, since 2021, she has enjoyed writing and teaching two Women’s Bible studies each year.  She also blogs at bethipock.com about discipleship and daily Christian living. She recently had an article published at thegospelcoalition.org.

Other church roles include co-directing VBS, singing in the choir, chairing the personnel committee, and filling in at the piano when needed.

Beth and her husband, Ellis, have five grown children, three daughters-in-love, 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
